Finding a truly natural shampoo brand for men is so frustrating! Check out these options that pass the test!
Clean and nontoxic personal care products are always marketed toward women. Why not men too?!
It’s not like all those nasty chemicals don’t affect men the same way they affect women. That’s why I’m here to talk about natural shampoo for men and how to pick a company that fits your needs.
Whether you’re a man looking to detox his bathroom cabinet, or a woman who’s trying to get her man on the clean beauty train, I’m happy you’re here! Men are suffering from the effects of toxic personal care products just as much as women.
And the saddest part is, most men are totally unaware of it!

The “Natural” Side of Male Hygiene is Extremely Problematic
There are tons of great natural shampoo options for men! Unfortunately, you have to do a bit of digging and think outside the box.
I’ve found that the selection of natural shampoo products geared toward men to be pretty narrow compared to women, which makes me very sad. It’s just a side of the cosmetics industry that isn’t booming or terribly lucrative.
Thanks the patriarchy, misogyny, our culture, whatever you want to call it, men are subconsciously discouraged from taking care of themselves. A man putting visible amounts of effort into his appearance is often seen as “weak” or “vain.”
It’s true that men can still have an extensive hygiene routine and still be “manly,” but those who are passionate about it are very few.
And to top it off, I’ve noticed that men often need a ton of convincing that their products are even toxic in the first place!! They’d rather be gaslit than admitting they’ve been duped by companies just like the rest of us.
If you’re a man reading this who is looking to switch to natural products, I commend you!! You’re doing yourself a huge favor in the long run.
I switched all of my husband’s products and he’s never felt better! He reluctantly let me switch his shampoo and body wash products without much complaint, and now he loves all the stuff I recommend to him.
I know I’m asking a lot here, but we need to break the stigma that men shouldn’t care about their body products! It’s okay to have more than two products in your shower! But let’s start with something easy and talk about shampoo.
Do Not Trust Most Natural Shampoo Brands for Men!
Another sad thing I’ve discovered about natural shampoo for men is that they are victims of more greenwashing than women’s products! I can’t tell you how many brands I’ve researched for this post that said they were all-natural when the ingredient list was horrible.
Even before I wrote this post, I was browsing through the microscopic men’s care section at my Natural Grocer’s a few months ago. Absolutely none of the products I looked at had good ingredient lists!
While there are certainly options for natural shampoo geared toward men, hardly any of them get my seal of approval. Because my search so was fruitless, I made a list of common “green” brands for men that I would stay away from.
* I want to note that these brands are totally okay to try! Clean beauty is a spectrum without any “set in stone” rules. So what’s not “natural” to me may be natural to you. There’s just better options than the brands below if you like to be on the “strict” end of the spectrum.
- Brickell—I would classify this brand as “better” on a scale of good/better/best. While most of the ingredients are organic and contains essential oils, I found that a few of their products contained skin irritants and Phenoxyethanol, an ingredient proven to be toxic to the nervous system.
Another thing to note is that Brickell is known for their restorative hair products. While that’s great, I noticed that the hair renewing power behind the product was mixtures of synthetic proteins. There are much more natural options for regrowing or supporting thinning hair!
- Every Man Jack—I wouldn’t even put this product on a good/better/best scale at all! It’s just as toxic as any other men’s hair care product on the shelf, despite their very subtle claims that their products are free of parabens, phthalates, and dyes.
I have no idea how they ended up in the green beauty space in the first place. Most products from Every Man Jack got a rating of four or higher on EWG, which isn’t good. I found that almost everything contained fragrance, phenoxyethanol, PPG’s and PEG’s.
None of these ingredients are good for your health long term! Fragrance is my most hated ingredient because it’s a loophole for companies to avoid disclosing what makes their products smell so good to keep it a trade secret.
That one little word can be a cover-up of hundreds of ingredients (including the ingredients they say the product is free of, like parabens).
That’s why I recommend that you be even more wary of natural men’s products, because the greenwashing is rampant!
Luckily, there are a few hidden gems out there that I’d like to highlight, as well as some simple life-hacks on finding the best natural shampoo for men.
Just Nutritive Shampoo for Men
The first brand I’d like to introduce you to is the first natural brand I ever discovered! Just nutritive is a small hair and skin care company that sells handmade products with only the most natural of ingredients.
They were pivotal for my clean beauty education when I just started, because they would display their ingredient lists proudly with each product and even offer little explanations as to why a certain ingredient was used.
You can check out my review of their hair care products to learn how I use them and got the most out of them, or check out my Just Nutritive skin care review to see how they helped with my body acne.
I’m super happy to have found that Just Nutritive redid their men’s products and created their own Gentlemen Section! They have everything hair and skin care with “manly” scents, so you won’t have to compromise.
They have natural shampoo, a nontoxic body wash, and even a few things for skin and beard care.
Heck, they have an entire section of their website devoted to natural beard care. Just Nutritive has all of their bases covered when it comes to natural, comprehensive men’s hair and skin care.

Dr. Squatch Natural Men’s Shampoo
Although most of my research on natural shampoo for men was rather depressing, there was one diamond in the rough that I found that totally made my day!
I stumbled across Dr. Squatch, a natural shampoo company geared toward men, but it’s so much more than that.
They have everything under the sun when it comes to natural men’s products, and it all gets my seal of approval!
Their shampoo comes in a big bottle, which my husband appreciates because he likes to shop for stuff like this maybe once a year. And yes, Dr. Squatch makes sure that they maintain optimal man scents in their products!
I also have to mention their hilarious yet right-on-the-money marketing. After I finished my research for this post, I was inevitably bombarded with their commercials before all of my YouTube videos. They get right to the point that men deserve to know what’s in their hair care products, and they can feel better too.
My husband finds their commercials annoying, but that’s beside the point. When you do what I do for a living, you appreciate the few companies that get what you’re trying to teach everyone else.
If you’re a guy looking to replace all of your personal care products, Dr. Squatch is a fantastic option!
Just be careful to read the ingredient list before every purchase. I’ve looked at their products over the years to find them going back on their promises. But at the time of updating this article, everything looked great to me!

Andalou Naturals Men Fortifying+ Shampoo and Conditioner
The last brand I think is worth highlighting is a new line from Andalou Naturals. I’ve seen Andalou Naturals as a hit-or-miss brand in terms of ingredients, but they seem to be stepping up their game.
They recently came out with a line called Men Fortifying+ that includes pretty much everything you could want in terms of men’s personal care products. But for the sake of this article, I’ll stick to the shampoo.
If you’re still holding on to all-in-one notion for men’s hair care, then this is for you! The Men Fortifying+ Shampoo and Conditioner claims to be a three in one product (clean, nourish, and condition). While I think it’s a little marketing overkill to say three-in-one instead two-in-one, the ingredient list gets my approval.
All products from this line are infused with hemp stem cells, which will *not* get you high, and actually works to strengthen your hair and promote growth. This shampoo is also completely vegan and cruelty-free!
I’ve been able to see a few products from this line in grocery stores, but it’s really a toss-up. But my husband absolutely loves the shampoo!

Best Natural Shampoo for Men’s Hair Loss and Thinning Hair
Another thing I want to note is that I came across a lot of need for natural products designed to support men’s thinning hair, or losing hair altogether. Even when chatting with the few males that follow Essential Moves to Wellness, they discovered the natural side of shampoo when they started losing their hair and realized they needed something better.
Although it’s not in their Gentlemen Section, Just Nutritive also offers plenty of treatments to help you grow new hair and support thinning hair. Take a gander at their hair treatment page, and you’ll find a few options to your liking.
There’s a Grow New Hair Treatment, one of Just Nutritive’s top-selling products. It’s full of essential oils that will stimulate your scalp and promote new hair growth, like rosemary, peppermint, and clary sage.
It’s also full of nourishing oils, like apricot and coconut oil, to make sure that the existing and new hair stays full and healthy.
The Men’s Hair Loss Treatment is also great option, because it’s got a formula that’s designed to bring long-lost hair back to life. It contains arnica extract to stimulate the scalp while preserving any thinning hair that’s about to fall out.
Whichever one of these products you choose, I can guarantee you that they will work just as well, if not better than, any synthetic men’s hair loss products you’ll find. Why not reduce your chemical exposure and try something natural?

My Favorite “Hack” for Finding Natural Shampoo for Men
If none of these options sound good for you or your lifestyle, I’ve got a secret to share.
If you want to find good options for natural men’s hair care, just get shampoo from any natural hair care brand! The key is to avoid anything floral smelling.
Check out my post on shampoo without chemicals to see some of my favorite brands. Not all of them smell like a super feminine meadow of spring flowers.
Just because something is primarily marketed toward women, doesn’t mean that men shouldn’t use it too! Women steal clothes from the men’s department all the time. Why not have it go both ways?
Yes, you most likely won’t get the typical “man scent” out of these natural shampoos, but hey, sometimes you have to compromise. I’ve never particularly liked man scents anyways. They always overwhelm my sensitive nose.
This is actually what I’ve done for my husband when he let me change out his shower products. I’ve been buying him shampoo from Acure and he has no complaints! It’s also your best bet for finding a more mild shampoo for men if you’re sensitive like me.
