EBay bought the stake in Craigslist in 2004 for $32 million, paying $16 million to then-disgruntled shareholder Phillip Knowlton and $8 million each to Craigslist founder Craig Newmark and chief executive Jim Buckmaster.
eBay has buyer protection policies that give customers more confidence and trust when buying through the platform. On the other hand, Craigslist does not offer the same protection, making it more risky for buyers to transact with Craigslist sellers.
Do People Still Use Craigslist? Absolutely. You can search your local area on Craigslist and find used furniture, cars, rentals, and even jobs. However, because so many Craigslist alternatives exist, it is no longer a one-stop shopping powerhouse when it debuted in 1995.
Today, eBay is a publicly traded company, which means it has no majority shareholder. As of May 2023, the largest individual shareholder is Thomas J.Tierney, with a 0.76% stake in the company. And the largest institutional shareholder is Vanguard Group Inc., with a 7.36% stake.
One of the most significant downsides of fees on eBay is the cost. eBay charges various fees, including listing fees, final value fees, and optional upgrade fees for things like bold listings or scheduling. These fees can add up quickly, particularly if you're selling high-value items or listing multiple products.
In 2004, eBay bought a 28.4% stake in Craigslist and spent years trying to clone it, leading to a seven-year fight that settled when eBay sold its shares back to Craigslist for an undisclosed amount in 2015. Prior to Craigslist repurchasing its shares from eBay, Newmark held a 42.6% stake, while Buckmaster owned 29%.
1998 saw a new chief executive officer, Meg Whitman, take the helm with eBay now recording revenues of $4.7 million with 30 employees on board. Whitman led eBay to a 1998 public listing with the company's share price standing at $18.
After spending Labor Day weekend at home writing code on his personal computer, eBay founder Pierre Omidyar launches AuctionWeb, a site "dedicated to bringing together buyers and sellers in an honest and open marketplace."
